Deeney completes his transfer to the Riverside since departing Midland League Premier Division club Basford United.

Announcing the new addition, Institute chairman Keith McElhinney said:

“Saul Deeney is a good player with a lot of experience, and as a committee we’re delighted to welcome him to the club.

“Hopefully it won’t be long before he makes his debut and I’m sure he will play a massive role in our end of season performances.”

Having guided the club to promotion last year, the experienced coach, along with assistant John Cunningham and the rest of the backroom staff, has clearly prepared for a good fight in the top flight this term after earning four important points in Stute’s opening two matches.

After last night’s North-West derby, the Sky Blue gaffer had the following to say:

“Excellent result, couldn’t have written the script any better, great to get three points on the board this early. It’s good to build on.”

“It was always going to be difficult in the North-West derby, we were probably second best in the first-half, but we had a chat about it at half-time, and we were much better in the second-half, scored two good goals and maybe should’ve scored another one or two.”

“Stevie Curry’s goal was tremendous, it was a fantastic strike, and the second goal was really well worked and Darren has come in off the line well, played a one-two, and finished it with his left foot, so really pleased for him for all the work he’s put in.”

“The defence was also solid, we have some great options at the back. Obviously we had Mark Scoltock and Paddy McLaughlin today, and Mr Consistency Graham Crown as well, but there are others like Stephen O’Donnell, John Curran and Dean Curry who could return.”

“We’ve played well today, but we need to take a look at Cliftonville now, and pick a team for Saturday in training that’ll best match them. You have to be flexible in the Premiership, and we have good depth in squad so we can rotate if necessary.”

The ex-Derry City defender rejoined the Sky Blues this summer from Limavady United and has immediately slotted into the back four comfortably, developing a sturdy partnership with captain Paddy McLaughlin.

Breaking the stalemate in the second-half with the necessary attacking flair, while remaining consistently solid at the back throughout the match thanks to the workload of Paddy McLaughlin, Mark Scoltock and Graham Crown – Paul Kee’s men put in a great team performance this evening, which proved essential in ensuring the win.

Another positive note in relation to this tie was the turnout – the stands at all ends were packed with supporters from both Institute and Coleraine, and the club committee would like to thank everyone who attended the game tonight.
