Warrenpoint 5-1 Institute

With the season coming towards an end, yesterday’s fixture quickly emerged as a major clash in the battle for Premiership survival.

Last time Institute travelled to Milltown they emerged as winners after striker Paul McVeigh netted the game’s only goal in stoppage time.

This encounter was not going to mirror this previous tie however, with Warrenpoint recording a triumphant 5-1 victory against their rivals.

A hattrick from frontman Daniel Hughes, combined with finishes from Darren Forsyth and Stephen Hughes, undid Institute’s consolation goal.

Davitt Walsh had pulled one back for the visitors on 66 minutes via a cross from captain Paddy McLaughlin, but this made no difference.

To add to Intitute’s misery, midfielder Aaron Walsh was sent off after 49 minutes by the referee for a heavy tackle on Stephen Hughes.

This has put a serious dent in ‘Stute’s remaining survival hopes, with the gap between the Drumahoe men and Warrenpoint extending to 8 points.
