Competition: NIFL Reserve League
Result: Institute II 5-1 Warrenpoint Town Res.

Institute Seconds moved up to third place in the NIFL Reserve league on Saturday with a comprehensive victory over Warrenpoint Reserves at the Riverside Stadium.

Stute were by far the better team on the day and took an early 13th minute lead when Robbie Hume fired home from 12 yards after Ronan Doherty’s initial effort had been blocked.  Eight minutes later Hume almost doubled the lead when he beat the offside trap but lifted the ball over the advancing ‘keeper and agonisingly over the crossbar.  The home side were denied what looked like a certain penalty just before the break when Ben Doherty was barged over inside the box but despite their appeals the referee waved play on.

The Drumahoe men raised the tempo of their game in the second half and had doubled their lead within 8 minutes of the restart.  Jamie McIntyre’s corner was met by defender Dean Curry but his powerful header cannoned off the crossbar and down onto the goal line where Gary Henderson reacted quickly to blast the ball into the roof of the net.  Minutes later Curry saw another header drift just wide of the goal as the home side pilled on the pressure.  Curry played an instrumental role in Stute’s third goal when his towering header set Hume through on goal.  Darcey in the Warrenpoint goal could only parry Hume’s effort and the ball fell kindly for Ben Doherty who made no mistake with the follow-up.

Doherty was unfortunate to see an effort rattled the upright following a fine flowing move but as torrential rain engulfed the Riverside Warrenpoint suddenly found themselves back in the game.  Jude Ballard’s unfortunate slip presented the chance for Mullholland to race clear to beat Marty Gallagher in the Stute goal.  Gallagher produced an outstanding save within minutes to prevent McCabe grabbing a second for the visitors but thankfully Institute regained their composure and substitute Jordan Thompson’s dangerous cross was turned home by defender Irwin just as Ryan Varma looked certain to score.  With virtually the last kick of the game Thompson produced the goal of the game as he turned under pressure and curled his effort beyond the reach of Darcey into the top corner of the net for Stute’s fifth of the afternoon.

Institute II:  Martin Gallagher, Ryan Varma, Graeme Taylor, Dean Curry, Gary Henderson, Jude Ballard, Ronan Doherty, Jordan Armstrong, Robbie Hume, Ben Doherty, Jamie McIntyre. Subs: Jordan Thompson, Matty Young, Conal Crawford, Thomas McBride.

The Seconds are on their travels next Saturday as they visit Comber Rec in the first round of the Intermediate Cup, K.O. 1:30pm.
