Institute retained the North-West Senior Cup on Tuesday night with an entertaining 4-2 win over Coleraine. Stute started strongly and ripped their top flight opponents’ defence to shreds time after time to race into a 2-0 lead. Mark Kelly released Dean Jarvis down the left and his cross was poked past Gavin Cullen by Dean Carlyle. A few minutes later, Kelly and Jarvis combined again on the left wing, and Kelly’s cross was tapped in by Thomas McBride.
A shell-shocked Coleraine then got going and, when Curtis Allen pulled one back at the second attempt, they were looking dangerous, but a moment of madness by winger Ciaran Clarke saw the Bannsiders reduced to 10 men shortly afterwards.
Coleraine were fired up after the break and hit the crossbar twice in rapid succession, but it was Stute who scored next, a great solo effort from Carlyle who cut inside from the left wing and hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner from just outside the area.
Coleraine continued to press and a soft free-kick awarded by referee Paddy McFadden was coolly dispatched by Allen for his second to make it 3-2. However, McBride sealed victory with a deflected shot from a quick break upfield soon after.
Coleraine never gave up though, and it was only another superb goalkeeping display from young Corey Wilson that prevented the Bannsiders from scoring a third, particularly an excellent Gordon Banks-esque save deep in injury time to deny Allen his hat-trick.
