Stute can find themselves a little fortunate to find themselves in the final of the Craig Memorial cup after defeating New Buildings 4-2 on Saturday. It took a man of the match performance from keeper Corey Wilson to ensure their was no upset.
Institute rushed into an early 2 goal lead with goals from Parkhouse and Carlyle. New Buildings were then awarded a penalty after former ‘Stute player Garth Falconer was brought down by Wilson with the ref pointing to the spot and showing the keeper a yellow card. Wilson then saved the Dougherty’s resuting penalty. ‘Stute then went 3 up with McCarron scoring from Roddy’s corner. Newbuildings were always creating chances at the other end but couldn’t find the quality in front of goal. Robinson found himself free in front of goal twice only to fluff his finish as did Dougherty. Scanlon was unlucky when a shot was turned round the post, but United found a way back into the game when Moore rose highest to score from one of the numerous corners the home team forced in the first half.
Half Time, Newbuildings 1-3 Institute.
Newbuildings came out in the second half and from the kick off were causing ‘Stute problems. Chances were coming thick and fast, Dougherty, Robinson, Falconer and Curry were all being thwarted by Man of the match Wilson. Shots were flying past the post, headers going over the top but Institute stood firm. Dougherty weaved past three defenders only to have his shot parried by Wilson but Curry was on hand to stroke the ball past Wilson. Falconer missed the biggest opportunity to equalize when he placed his shot past the keeper only for the post to deny him, he then let fly from 25 yds only to see Wilson turn the effort round the upright at full stretch. Institute delivered the hammer blow when Parkhouse cooly finnished from Carlyle’s pin-point cross to end the tie. McCarron had a further chance but shot wide.
The win now sets up a boxing day clash with Tobermore.
