Institute Seconds made it two wins from two with a 3-2 victory at the Coleraine Showgrounds last night – but for two late goals by the home team this would have been a more emphatic result.
Darren McFadden gave the visitors the lead on the half hour mark when he converted from the penalty spot after he himself had been sent tumbling in the box, while two minutes later Mark McGroarty doubled the lead when he curled a delightful effort into the top corner from the edge of the box.
Stute then added a third on 38 minutes again from the penalty spot and once more it was McFadden who coolly slotted home after McGroarty had been chopped down.
Coleraine were brighter in the second period but the ‘Sky Blues’ still posed the greater threat as Jordan Thompson and Ricky-Lee Dougherty both tried their luck from distance. Suddenly though, with just 4 minutes remaining on the clock, the home side pulled one back when from a corner kick, a near-lost header saw the ball fly past Corey Wilson into the roof of the net.
In the 90th minute sloppy defending allowed Coleraine to pull another back, but to the relief of the visitors, the referee blew for full time directly from the restart.
For all but the last five minutes Stute were on top in this game, and had defended well against a lively Coleraine side. They certainly deserved the victory and will face a tough task on Saturday as they travel to Solitude to play reigning champions Cliftonville Olympic.
