After a devastating defeat on Friday evening, Institute were keen to bounce back in the cup against Moyola Park, after a bad week on and off the pitch. Kyle Friel Curran and Dean Curry were the only changes from Friday night.
The first half started with ‘Stute dominating play and creating opportunities. ‘Stute restricted the home side to their own half for the opening twenty five minutes. However, with ‘Stute failing to capitalise the home side started creating opportunities and finished the half with more shots on target than the Drumahoe side.
The second half was started quickly by the away side, with fantastic pressing and passing football. Soon after the break Niall Grace scored from twenty yards to give ‘Stute a well deserved lead, after an excellent attacking move. However as the second half continued ‘Stute failed to get a second. Moyola Park scored from an excellent free kick to get them back into the match. The second half ended with the scores still tied, ‘Stute unlucky not to get a lead after hitting the post twice.
The game went into extra time and both sides had several half chances. Credit must be given to Moyola Park who matched ‘Stute all the way despite being the league below. Extra time was open with both sides playing attacking football, but no side could find any end product.
After neither side could find a winner the game went onto a penalty shootout. ‘Stute scored 8/8 penalties with goalkeeper Marty Gallagher finding the net, however, Moyola Park missed their final kick giving ‘Stute the win; and with it a place in the next round.
Full Time: Moyola Park 1 vs. Institute 1. (7-8) on penalties.
