The first-team recorded a good start to this season’s League Cup campaign by overseeing a 2-0 victory against Championship 2 side Dollingstown F.C. on Monday night – goals from ex-Derry City duo Thomas McBride and Cormac Burke sealing the win for the club.
As the game began it quickly became clear that visitors were not be ruled out too hastily – Dollingstown had already earned two wins in their opening two league matches following their promotion into senior football this year for the first time in 35 years – and they immediately looked like a capable side although up against tough Premiership opposition.
Despite this however, Institute remained the superior team throughout the match, and on 22 minutes this became clear when a good team move led to Cormac Burke supplying a pinpoint pass across the edge of the area to Thomas McBride, before the young midfielder met with the ball perfectly, blasting into the top, right corner of the goal – leaving goalkeeper David Wilton with absolutely no chance.
Following on from this, Institute continued to attempt to pile on the pressure, but the Dollingstown defence managed to hold out well, and this meant that the scoreline remained fixed at 1-0 heading into the half-time break.
The second phase began with Institute appearing stronger, while Dollingstown started to feel the effects of the game as each minute ticked on, and although both teams continued to work hard, it became ever clear that Institute were going to double their lead at some stage – this eventually came through a finish from Cormac Burke, the midfielder being set-up by substitute Paul McVeigh, the striker just recently joining from Finn Harps.
With this, the game faded out with little action of note, Stute continuing to command the flow of the match while Dollingstown denied them from increasing the scoreline further.
The club committee would like to thank everyone who made the effort to attend tonight’s game, and would like to extend an invitation to everyone to make the short journey to the Riverside this Saturday as the Premiership campaign continues against visiting side Warrenpoint.
