Institute took on Portadown today, looking to keep pressure on table toppers Ballyclare Comrades. After a impressive win against H&W Welders ‘Stute were looking to maintain there 100% record at Wilton Park.
The match kicked off with an under pressure Portadown looking to prove a point. Both teams started with vigour and momentum with every ball fiercely contested for. However it was Portadown that took the lead, after ‘Stute goal keeper Marty Gallagher was impeded from a corner kick. This did not affect ‘Stute and after impressive attacking play, Dean Curry scored a brilliant header from a well delivered corner from brother Stephen Curry. Despite the equaliser, Portadown soon went back on top after a mix up in the back allowed a easy finish for the away side.
The second half was more of the same with both teams desperate for the victory. Both teams created plenty of chances with both goal keepers busy throughout the second half. However, it was the home side who scored the only goal of the half after a deflection resulted in a own goal. Both teams fought until the end, with Portadown finishing the second half looking most threatening. Marty Gallagher done well for the final twenty minutes of half enduring continuous taunting from the away supporters, making some vital saves. The match ended with the scores tied, an important point for the home team in their quest for promotion.
