After a devastating end of season finale, the summer of 2017 was one of transition for Institute. Manager Kevin Deery, resigned as well as club captain Stephen O’Donnell leaving for Premier League club Coleraine to name a few. Paddy McLaughlin was named as manager, Michael McCrudden was appointed captain with a host of summer signings joining to bolster the squad.
In his first competitive match as Institute Manager, Paddy McLaughlin was determined to get off to winning ways as a new league campaign began. However, things started poorly with ‘Stute conceding two minutes in, despite hand ball appeals. The first half was scrappy, with ‘Stute showing glimpses of quality but no end product. ‘Stute persevered despite questionable refereeing and poor tackling from Dergview players. The first half ended with ‘Stute on top of play. Credit needs to go to Darryl McDermott and Stephen Curry for their aerial duels, and Ryan Morrow for his play down the right hand side.
The second half saw a stunning performance from ‘Stute, despite a poor Darryl McDermott sending off ten minutes in. ‘Stute dominated play and played very attractive football. The introductions of Alex Pomery and Gareth Brown from the new manager Paddy McLaughlin was a stroke of genius. Aaron Harkin scored a clever free kick to put ‘Stute level. The second goal was coming from the minute the game kick started. Ryan Morrow scored an early contender for goal of season; cutting in from the right wing on his left foot and blasting it into the far corner. An excellent display, to get ‘Stute off to a winning start, with Eammon Seydak having a cracker debut.
Full Time: Dergview 1 vs. Institute 2 Congrats Paddy!
