It can only be described as a day of sheer madness as ‘Stute emerged from Lakeview Park with a 5-5 draw thanks to a 94th minute equaliser from Aaron Walsh.
‘Stute started brightly with McCrudden teasing the Loughgall defence drawing foul after foul, but with ‘Stute unable to take advantage of their early dominance they fell behind after Costello nipped in front of John Curran to poke the home side ahead. Their lead lasted until the 22nd minute when McCrudden equalised with a thunderbolt free kick from 30 yards straight into the top corner. ‘Stute at this stage were looking to kick on- but found themselves behind once again as sloppy defending cost them as Costello popped up with his second. With the first half going into injury time- ‘Stute equalised through Stephen O’Flynn. The big striker held off 2 defenders, squared the ball to McCauley out wide, who beat 2 defenders and crossed to O’Flynn who made no mistake from 12 yards to equalise on the stroke of half time. Half time, Loughgall 2-2 Institute.
Just like the first half, ‘Stute came out all guns blazing but could not break down the stern Loughgall rearguard. O’Flynn came agonisingly close to putting the ‘Stute ahead when in the 58th minute his half volley came crashing off the crossbar. With ‘Stute pressing they were caught on the counter attack and once again fell behind as Loughgall were awarded a penalty after Paddy McLaughlin was adjudged to have brought down their striker. Costello stepped up and notched his 3rd of the game by cooly sending Marty Gallagher the wrong way. Paul Kee then made a double substitution by bringing off McCauley and McCrudden and replacing them with Hume and Curry. Almost instantaneously Hume got hold of the ball and released Curry who made no mistake and leveled matters once again at 3-3. Within 2 minutes ‘Stute were ahead for the first time in the game as Robbie Hume scored direct from a corner to put ‘Stute 4-3 up with 5 minutes remaining. You could have been forgiven for thinking that the game was over at that stage and ‘Stute had secured the 3 points- but Loughgall had other ideas. With the game going into the 88th minute they equalised after Bradley fired home from from 6 yards after good work down the right wing by Costello. Then just as it looked like both teams would have to settle for a point- Rooney out-jumped Greame Crown at the back post to put Loughgall 5-4 up in the 92nd minute. ‘Stute had one last chance to salvage something from the game as they were awarded a corner in the 94th minute. Aaron Walsh crossed it and unbelievably it went straight into the back of the net.
