Institute 3-2 Ards Rangers

March 10th, 2012 | by admin

Institute survived a late Ards Rangers’ comeback to make it through to the semi-final of the Intermediate Cup. Stute took the lead on 18 minutes when John Curran headed in a corner. Stute doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half when the ball broke to Parkhouse in the box following a long throw and he smashed it into the roof of the net. The pick of Stute’s goals came on 70 minutes when Joe McCready beat the visiting keeper from the edge of the box. Man of the Match McCready soon followed this with a spectacular scissor-kick which was pushed away by the keeper. At 3-0 the only question seemed to be how many Stute could score, but Rangers pulled a goal back through a spectacular Campbell strike with 8 minutes remaining. The goal, from well outside the box on the left hand side of the pitch came from absolutely nowhere, but the visitors then went straight back down the pitch and won a penalty when Gallagher was adjudged to have brought down a striker in the box. The Stute stopper was booked, and though he dived the right way, couldn’t keep out Newberry’s spotkick. Rangers had two great chances to draw level, the first in a goalmouth scramble and the second a free header, but somehow Stute survived. At the other end, Michael McCrudden should have made it 4 at the death, but put the ball wide from 5 yards out with the goal gaping
