Institute progressed to the next round of the Craig Memorial cup thanks to a 2-1 win over Newbuildings on Friday night. ‘Stute fans could have been excused for thinking that it was going to be a formality, with the gap in leagues and ‘Stute’s excellent start to the season- but it was far from the case.
Newbuildings, whose side featured no less that 7 ex ‘Stute players started the sharper and took the lead in the 3rd minute thanks to a header from Richard ‘Dicky’ Lynch. Minutes later, Ricky Lee Dougherty had another good chance for the visitors, but ‘Stute stopper Marty Gallagher saved well. It took until the 37th minute for the hosts to create their first opportunity, when Darren McCauley found himself through one on one with only Corey Wilson to beat- McCauley duly dispatched the ball away in the bottom corner, leaving the score 1-1 at half time.
A rejuvenated ‘Stute side came out all guns blazing in the second half, and it didn’t take them long to find themselves in front. Darren McFadden continued his recent good from by confidently striking past the helpless Wilson. With neither side creating any more chances, and ‘Stute controlling the possession- the match finished 2-1 to Stute.
