After suffering a disappointing set back last week in their charge for promotion, Institute this week faced PSNI. After defeat at the hands of league champions Warrenpoint, ‘Stute were keen to get back to winning ways, and gather momentum for the crucial final stage of the season; with promotion being the end prize.
The first half started with Institute attacking down the right hand side, a theme that was constant throughout the first half. First ten minutes it was even possession with both sides pressing the ball. However, a stunning strike from twenty five yards from PSNI’s McDowell stunned ‘Stute. Despite this, ‘Stute responded well creating several fantastic opportunities, as well as having a penalty claim waved away. Stephen O’Donnell and Sean Ruddy deserving credit for their long-range passing, with Stephen Curry looking threatening down the right; but a first half goal did not come.
The second half was a scrappy one, with chances for both sides. PSNI’s McDowell hit the crossbar with a second great attempt. ‘Stute struggled to break down a very well organised PSNI defence and midfield. However for all their organisation PSNI offered very little in attack with a route one approach, which worked effectively until the 82nd minute when ‘Stute won a penalty. Sean Ruddy stepped up but was denied by PSNI’s in form keeper. However, PSNI’s rearguard was broken on the 90th minute with a superb header from target man Sammy Morrow, who headed from 10 yards into the top corner.
