A draw between Institute and Newry at the Riverside this afternoon allowed Ballinamallard to pull further away at the top of the IFA Championship table. Newry took the lead after 25 minutes of an uninspiring first half when Havern was sent through and lobbed Stute keeper Marty Gallagher from the edge of the box. The lead barely lasted 5 minutes however. Stute’s Declan McKeever ran from just inside the Newry half and unleashed a shot from 25 yards out. The Newry keeper dived to attempt to palm the well-hit but speculative effort out for a corner, but only succeeded in pushing it into the net. The second half was much improved as a spectacle, with the home side having most of the position, but Newry looking more likely to score. Stute’s best chances fell to Coleraine loanee Darren McCauley who fired wide after a good build up, and McKeever, who beat his man on the wing but then opted to shoot rather than square the ball. At the other end, the Stute defence were living dangerously, and scrambled away a few goal bound efforts, as well as managing to make a last gasp goaline clearance, which agonisingly for the visitors saw the ball roll along the goal line and then out of play. In the end, neither side deserved to win it, and Ballinamallard march on.
