An injury time equaliser from Loughgall’s Daniel Ryan meant Institute had to settle for a draw for a second successive week. After reaching the top of Championship 1 following last week’s draw with Dergview, Institute will have been disappointed with a below par first half performance which saw the visitors look the most likely to score.
Indeed, there was a huge let-off for Stute stopper Michael Doherty on 40 minutes when a Loughgall striker took the ball round him before somehow sliding the ball wide of the empty yet from 8 yards out. The home side improved somewhat in the second half, but were struggling to trouble the Loughgall keeper. Michael McCrudden did have the ball in the net with 15 minutes left but was ruled offside.
Stute finally made the breakthrough on 82 minutes. Darren McCauley, who had been closely watched all afternoon, was brought down just outside the area on the left hand side. McCrudden’s resulting free kick came back off the inside of the post, but only as far as Matty Crossan who gleefully volleyed home. Five minutes later, McCrudden had the chance to finish the contest when played clean through, but was denied by a good save. Stute were made to pay the price deep into injury time when Boyle played a weighted ball over the Institute defence and Ryan smashed it home.
