Institute 0-1 Harland & W. W.

A poor game at the Riverside this afternoon saw Harland and Wolff Welders take all 3 points. The best chances for each side in a forgettable first half came just before the interval, with a Welders striker unable to make any meaningful connection when the ball reached him 10 yards out, and his shot spun well wide. At the other end, Stute for once beat the offside trap, but McCrudden and McCauley got in each other’s way when the ball was pulled back to edge of the box. The visitors took the lead with 20 minutes remaining when a cross from the right was cleared only as far as Muir who forced it home. Five minutes from time, substitute striker Sean McCarron looked to have given the home side a lifeline when he was pulled down in the box, but his resulting penalty lacked conviction and was saved by the stand-in Welders keeper. Institute will need a much improved performance if they are to see off Dergview in Tuesday’s Intermediate Cup semi-final at Stangmore Park
