A Stephen O’Flynn goal at the start of the second half proved enough to give ‘Stute the 3 points in a hard fought battle at Tillysburn.
‘Stute started the brighter of the 2 teams and with just 2 minutes on the clock the Welders keeper saved from a John Curran header. Moments later McCauley shot wide and McCrudden also had a good effort parried away by the keeper. The Welders seemed content to sit deep and try catch ‘Stute on the break without really causing the ‘Stute rearguard much trouble. Half Time Welders 0-0 Institute.
‘Stute came out the second half all guns blazing and found themselves in front in the 50th minute when McCrudden cut in from the left, unleashed a shot which the keeper could only parry and Stephen O’Flynn tapped in from 6 yards to give the away side the lead. The remainder of the second half took the same pattern as the first with ‘Stute controlling the possession and the Welders making it difficult to break them down. The Welders did have their first threat in the 88th minute when ‘Stute stopper Micheal Doherty did well to tip an effort around the post when it seemed destined to hit the back of the net.
