Stephen O’Flynn was Stute’s hero as his hat-trick secured Stute’s passage in to the 5th round of the Intermediate Cup against Crumlin Star. Played in a bitterly cold day in blustery conditions at The Cliff in Larne, ‘Stute began strongly when with only 5 minutes on the clock, some good interplay from McCrudden, McFadden and O’Flynn with the latter slotting a right foot shot home to give Stute the lead. The lead lasted all of 7 minutes as the home side were back on level terms when a strong run and shot from Crumlin’s centre forward Patrick O’Neill leveled matters. Half Time 1-1.
In the 49th minute a good run down the right from arguably Crumlin’s best player Stephen Brown saw his cross met at the near post and was turned in by big O’Neill and it was 2-1 to Crumlin. ‘Stute had to show character and that they did with O’Flynn getting his second of the game in the 56th minute when good play from himself and McFadden saw him pass the ball in to the net for 2-2. With the game looking destined for extra-time that man O’Flynn popped up in the 84th minute to seal his hat-trick and ultimately Stute’s passage to a last 16.
The victory now sets up a local derby against near neighbours Newbuildings United next Saturday 15th February. Kick off time to be confirmed.
